Sequence Dancing Sessions
Sequence dancing has been popular for many years - Veleta (1900), Cokey Cokey (1942) - Line Dancing at the present day.
Like line dancing there is no caller - you need someone who knows the dance to lead it off. If it is a full-time sequence session the Leader (or MC) will announce the the name of the dance and put on the recorded music. He will then demonstrate one or two sequences and the majority will then join in - it is not usually a spectator sport! Some 15-20 sequence dances will be performed in a 2-3 hour session with a short interval for refreshments.
In the UK these dances are often not advertised - the people in the know, know where to go! Despite its great popularity it is little known to the general public.
A less intensive type of session is the mixed ballroom and sequence social dance (sometimes called a Tea Dance or a 50-50 session) - these have a mixture of sequence and go-as-you-please dances like the ballroom quickstep. Certain sequences like the Square Tango, Sindy Swing, Saunter Together have retained their popularity over the years. These are the best dances to learn first - full details are explained in the Books and DVDs listed on the Westport (UK) Ltd web page. the tuition and commentaries given on the DVDs are given and performed by experts and scripts are listed in the Books specified.
Music for sequence dancing has a 4 bar introduction, so that all can start the sequence together. There is a wide variety of suitable music specially recorded for this style of dancing.
